Dance of Knives is the sort of Rogue build that makes Diablo IV feel quick from the first few levels. You're moving, cutting through packs, and barely stopping unless a boss forces the issue. It also scales well once your D4 items start filling the right slots, which is why so many players use it as a bridge from early leveling into serious endgame setups. The build usually starts with Poison Imbuement, then later shifts toward a Cold version built around The Umbracrux.
The Poison setup is the easiest way to get rolling. Blade Shift is used to build Combo Points and keep your Energy in a decent place, then Dance of Knives does the clearing. The trick isn't just pressing the skill and hoping it works. You need to keep moving through enemies. That movement helps the build feel smooth, because your sustain depends a lot on staying active inside packs. Poison Imbuement is your answer for elites, bosses, and anything that refuses to fall over quickly. If your early gear feels weak, Shadow Imbuement can help with pack clearing until Poison damage catches up.
You'll get used to the rhythm fast. Hit enemies with Blade Shift to set up Combo Points, turn on Poison Imbuement, use Dark Shroud for protection, then slip into Dance of Knives and carve through the group. Concealment is handy when you need speed, safety, or a quick reset. Dash is mostly there for travel between packs, not because the damage plan needs it. Early skill points should go into the pieces that make the build function: Dance of Knives first, then your Imbuement, Dark Shroud, and Concealment. It's not a fussy build, but it does punish standing still.
The early endgame Poison version keeps the same basic style. It's good for lower Torment farming, boss runs, and grabbing the Uniques you'll want later. This is also where the Sightless set starts to matter. Its stealth-based bonuses fit Rogue gameplay nicely, giving you more damage after breaking stealth and better defenses when things get messy. Once the full set effect is active, the Shadow Clone interaction gives the build a bigger punch. It won't feel exactly like the late Cold version, but it gets you there without forcing a clumsy respec too soon.
The stronger pushing version swaps to Cold Imbuement and leans on The Umbracrux. You dash in, drop Smoke Grenade, activate Shadow Clone and Cold Imbuement, then spin near the totem while your clone attacks it. That's where the burst comes from. Cowl of the Nameless is a key piece here, while Saboteur's Signet helps with Vulnerable, Weaken, and damage scaling. Shrouded Gift is often used when survival matters more. Mythic Uniques aren't required, though they do make the build easier to pilot. If you're upgrading through farming or checking D4 items buy options for missing pieces, focus on the required Uniques first, then tune defenses and utility around the content you're actually running.
