Here's how to choose with clear eyes. Reading the Symptoms Slipping — engine revs climb but speed doesn't follow — means worn clutch packs or dying internals. Shuddering under light throttle often points to a failing torque converter or degraded fluid. Delayed or harsh engagement into drive or reverse signals internal wear or valve body trouble. Burnt-smelling, dark fluid confirms the transmission has been running hot. And on CVT-equipped vehicles — many Nissans, some Subarus and others — whining, hesitation, and sudden loss of drive follow their own notorious script. One honest warning: a fluid change on a high-mileage, never-serviced transmission sometimes accelerates the failure rather than fixing it. If you're already feeling symptoms at 140,000 miles, fresh fluid is rarely the cure the internet promises.
